At least 3,600 outbreaks of moko have been contained to prevent the spread of the disease.
More than 400 producers trained in biosecurity measures.
The province of Los Ríos is making progress in implementing a health strategy aimed at preventing and controlling diseases that threaten banana production, including bacterial Moko and the Fusarium Tropical Race 4 fungus (Foc R4T).

These actions are being carried out within the framework of the cooperation agreement signed on September 27, 2024 between both institutions, which includes a technical plan based on permanent monitoring, outbreak control and training for producers to strengthen biosecurity measures in the field.
As part of the follow-up to the program, the prefect of Los Ríos, Johnny Terán , and the president of AEBE, Jorge Encalada , toured a banana plantation in the parish of San Juan, canton of Puebloviejo, to evaluate the progress of the program on the ground and analyze new cooperation processes.
“The agreements we make from the prefecture are with experts who know the activity. We must continue working and educating so that it does not spread,” the prefect stated.
For his part, the president of AEBE stressed that the producer is the first line of defense against phytosanitary threats , so early detection, the application of biosecurity protocols and technical training in the field are fundamental to preventing the spread of diseases and protecting banana production.

According to official data, the actions taken have contained more than 3,600 outbreaks of Moko disease in the province. Los Ríos accounts for approximately 40% of Ecuador's banana exports , making crop health a key factor for the region's productive and economic sustainability.
